Montrose Rugby Achievement Programme
Montrose Rugby, with the support of Friends of Scottish Rugby, will be launching their Rugby Achievement Programme this year. The innovative programme been created through engagement with young people and insight from other programmes being run across Scotland and has been designed to address the significant drop-off in participation in sport, particularly girls, from primary to secondary school.
Working with a range of community partners, including Montrose Academy, Active Schools and Scottish Rugby, an integrated programme has been developed that will support up to 60 young people, aged 11 to 14. They will learn new skills, understand the importance of teamwork and develop their physical and cognitive capabilities through rugby. This builds upon the club’s inclusive approach to community engagement through local primary schools and voluntary organisations.
In Year 1 of the Rugby Achievement Programme, girls and boys will be offered a will be offered a range of sessions providing high quality coaching and support in areas such game play, specialist skills, team working, as strength and conditioning, nutrition and mental wellbeing. The ethos of the sessions will focus on Scottish Rugby’s values of leadership, engagement, achievement, enjoyment and respect.
While rugby is being used to enable this programme, we have a vision of improved physical wellbeing, attainment and engagement from all of the young people involved. There will be a focus on behaviour, understanding and respecting others while encouraging creativity and problem-solving skills. Essentially, using the sport of rugby to develop and unleash the talent of the young people from the Montrose area.
This programme is aligned with the Scottish Government's vision of a more active Scotland, along with the Active Scotland Outcomes. Also, the club has focused on equality with there being no barrier to participation, particularly in terms of gender, poverty or current physical capability.
The coaches will come from the club and will be primarily older players from their youth section. The club has already supported them to take the UKCC Level 1 coaching course and they will be provided with guidance, support and oversight to enable this important programme. As well as funding high quality coaching and support, the club plans to provide training kit (shorts, tops, boots and gum shields) to all participants. This will allow all of the young people to participate safely and to develop a strong sense of identity.
Caroline Campbell, Montrose Rugby’s Community Engagement Lead, said “We are really excited about the launch of this innovative programme. The support from Friends of Scottish Rugby will make a huge difference to the young people in our community and provide them with new capabilities, experiences and life skills.”
