St Augustine's RC High School

The club was set up in March 2018 to address the lack of rugby being played at the school, local community and cluster primary schools.

The club has three main strands to it which include:
● S1-S2 Inclusion Rugby Academy
● S1-3 Non-Curriculum club that delivers training and games
● Primary school outreach delivery

St Augustine’s RC High School has a vast catchment area which serves as far as Granton in the East, South Queensferry in the West, Pilton in the North and Gilmerton in the South of Edinburgh. We serve a rich and diverse community of young people. Many of our young people live in areas of deprivation (SIMD 1-2). This makes up 60% of our school role. This reflects in our secondary playing numbers. 50% of our young people have English as a second language, 81% of our young people live in SIMD 1-3 and 70% have an Adverse Child Education need.

Objectives

Inclusion Rugby Academy:
● Support young people develop their social and academic skills through sport and fitness
● Support young people to develop their communication skills, self-confidence skills and independence
● Offer young people with work experience and volunteer coaching opportunities
● Provide alternative qualifications through sport
● Provide three weekly training sessions and regular competitive fixtures

Non-curriculum club
● Provide a friendly and inclusive environment for boys and girls to develop within
● Give each player weekly training and games that reflect the young persons abilities
● Offer young people opportunities to gain qualifications such as UKCC Level 1 and Refereeing Level 1

We plan to expand our Inclusion Rugby Academy to support young people who face barriers to learning. We run the academy in S1-S2 so we can provide early intervention. Supporting us to provide this academy helps these young people to gain brighter futures in training, work and further education. This academy has shown an increase in attendance, attainment and health and wellbeing levels. Last year, we gave three S4 pupils a chance to volunteer and train with the academy. From this, the three went onto secure college places in sport and employment due to the qualifications and experience achieved during with the club.

The number of youngsters we can help is limited to the amount of funding we can raise. St Augustine’s RC High School would therefore like to thank Friends of Scottish Rugby for their donation.
